“Help Bosnia now”
Text:
Calls for support from Bosnia and Herzegovina were addressed in different ways to the world. In late 1992, the music group “Bosnian Band Aid” gathered musicians from Sarajevo to record the song “Help Bosnia now”. The song’s refrain included the lyrics “You cannot not only watch and pray”. The song was recorded in the Zetra-hall, one of the central venues of the 1984 Olympic games in Sarajevo, and which was destroyed on May 21, 1992. The video of the song also showed pictures from the 1984 Olympics. Referencing 1984 highlighted the contrast between 1984, where the entire world had come to a radiant Sarajevo, and the current situation characterized by destruction and international disinterest in the city’s fate.
The lyrics
I cannot understand some people
who kill women and children
and helpless old men
making homeless millions of my friends
I don’t want to understand.
I cannot understand the army
which burns down its own country
and destroys the hospitals
and our precious monuments
we don’t want to understand.
Help Bosnia now,
And save Bosnian people
You cannot only watch and pray
our hearts just want you to say
help Bosnia now.
You cannot only watch and pray
our hearts just want you to say
help Bosnia now.
