“Witness to Genocide”
Journalists, war correspondents and photographers played a crucial role in informing outsiders about the situation in BiH, particularly atrocities committed against civilians. One of the first to do this was American journalist Roy Gutman, who gathered testimonies from refugees from Prijedor and other cities. His articles led other journalists to seek authorisation from Karadžić to visit the camps in Prijedor. Those journalists’ reports and photos of the camps would be seen around the world. Roy Gutman’s articles were gathered in a book titled “Witness to genocide”, which was published in 1993 and quickly translated into other languages. “This book is a cry for help from Bosnia to the rest of the world”, says the book’s back cover. Many other journalists and photographers witnessed and reported on the politics of ethnic cleansing in BiH, but often were in conflict with the editorial staff in their home countries who wanted to remain more “neutral”.
